Scrabulous blocked on larger scale on Facebook

Wednesday, August 27th, 2008

The Fight between Facebook and the makers of the game – Scrabble has come to an end finally with the later emerging as the winners.

The legal proceedings against the app had started in January when Mattel (the makers of the game) decided that Scrabulous was infringing on copyright and trademarks. It is believed Mattel wants to deploy its own version of Scrabble to the social networking world.

Facebook has decided to jump overboard and abandon the Facebook application ship before a court in India could push them. Which is more than a little odd, as usually you might expect it to wait for the legal ruling before taking the action.

Initially, the game was blocked in the US and Canada, but the ban appears to have spread worldwide with the exception of India.

Facebook today announced that it now has over 100 million ‘friends’ worldwide.

Rajat and Jayant Agarwalla  brothers have created a new application, Wordscraper, with circular tiles and a few new rules that they hope will withstand legal action. Scrabulous wasn’t banned in India because a lawsuit is in the works there and Facebook awaits the decision.
